Wilderness First Aid

The Emergency Care & Safety Institute (ECSI) Wilderness First Aid course is designed specifically for Scouts and Scouters to handle medical emergencies in remote settings where "definitive care" (a hospital or ambulance) is more than one hour away. This course emphasizes leadership, resourcefulness, and effective patient care under pressure.

Blended Learning

To provide maximum flexibility and safety, this course uses a Blended Learning model:

Part 1 (Online): 8 hours of cognitive learning, including videos, quizzes, and a final exam.
Part 2 (In-Person): 8 hours of hands-on, scenario-based skills practice and testing. Note: You must bring your Part 1 completion certificate to the Part 2 session.

Required Documentation

Online Course Completion Certificate: A printed or digital copy of your ECSI Scouting America WFA Awareness certificate.
Current CPR/AED Certification: Proof of current certification from a nationally recognized provider (required as a prerequisite for WFA certification).

Personal Supplies

Notebook and Pen: To take notes during scenario debriefs.
Personal First-Aid Kit: If you have one, bring it! The instructor may review your kit during the "Wilderness First-Aid Kits" module.
Water and Snacks: Training is 8 hours long; ensure you stay hydrated and energized.

Scouting America

While Scouting America recognizes providers like the American Red Cross and ECSI, ECSI currently offers the only blended format that meets Scouting America’s specific Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines.
